Surgeons
Dr Adili is a fellowship trained surgeon in lower extremity reconstruction, sports injuries and arthroplasty. He completed his medical school and residency at McMaster University. He then completed fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota. His current orthopaedic practice includes navigation and robotic surgery for hip and knee arthroplasty reconstruction and periarticular osteotomies, including total, unicompartmental and bicompartmental knee arthroplasty, lateral and posterior approaches to total hip arthroplasty, revision arthroplasty, and sports injuries about the knee including meniscal and ACL surgery.
His research interests include basic and clinical trials in navigation and robotics in orthopaedics, gait analysis, cartilage preservation and transplantation for the knee, opioid reduction in surgery including the cannabis research, and prosthetic joint infections.
Dr. Anthony Adili
Dr. Avram completed her Orthopaedic residency at McMaster University as well as her fellowship in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty.
Her practice is focused solely on primary hip and knee replacement. She had an interest in surgical education and teaching medical students. She is involved in competency-based education and has recently been appointed the Faculty wellness coordinator.
Dr. Vicky Avram
Dr. Khanna is a dual fellowship trained lower extremity arthroplasty surgeon. He completed his medical school at Dalhousie University and residency training at McMaster University. He then completed an Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction fellowship at the University of Ottawa followed by an additional Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Mount Sinai campus. He recently completed his Master in Health Administration from the University of Regina.
His current orthopaedic practice includes primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty as well as single limb trauma. He has a special interest in computer and robotic assisted surgery for alignment correction procedures around the hip and knee, as well as for partial and total knee replacement.
His research interests include assessing the impact of technology such as navigation, robotics and virtual reality on surgical outcomes and training. He also has an interest in researching patient factors that impact outcomes after total joint replacement.
He is currently the Program Director for the McMaster Orthopedic Residency Training Program.
Dr. Vickas Khanna
Dr Rajaratnam is a Fellowship Trained Upper Extremity, Trauma and Arthroplasty surgeon. He completed his medical school, residency and Fellowship training at the University of Toronto. He pursued advanced Fellowship training in Sydney, Australia,
His current clinical practice includes upper and lower joint arthroplasty, including primary, reverse and revision shoulder arthroplasty and advanced shoulder arthroscopy.
His research interests include residency education, shoulder arthroplasty in the young patient and outcome assessment.
Dr. Krishan Rajaratnam
Dr. Tushinski is a fellowship trained arthroplasty surgeon. He completed his medical school and residency training at McMaster University. He then underwent fellowship training at the University of Toronto, Mount Sinai, in lower extremity reconstruction. His current orthopaedic practice includes anterior and lateral total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, deformity correction, revision arthroplasty, and posttraumatic reconstruction.
His research interests include same-day home arthroplasty and opioid reduction strategies. He is currently the Clinical Teaching Unit director at the Juravinski site, and Fellowship director for the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University. He is completing his Masters of Science in Health Research Methodology. He is actively involved in education, research, and administrative work at both the University and hospital level.
Dr. Daniel Tushinski
Dr Williams completed his medical training at Dalhousie University and residency training at McMaster. He then underwent fellowships in Arthroplasty and Trauma through the Hamilton Arthroplasty Group at McMaster University and The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. His arthroplasty practice focuses on minimally invasive hip and knee replacements as well as complex primary and revision hip and knee replacements.
Dr Williams is the former Fellowship Director for the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is currently the Associate Division Head of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is actively involved in medical education, hospital administration and 3D printing innovations for surgical planning.
Dr. Dale Williams
Dr Bali is extensively trained and has completed his advanced fellowships in joint replacement surgery from Australia, Calgary, and University of Western Ontario. In addition, he is also fellowship trained in Trauma Surgery. Dr Bali specializes in all aspect of hip and knee replacement. His specific clinical interests include minimally invasive direct anterior hip arthroplasty as well as complex primary/revision arthroplasty of hip and knee. His practice is primarily based at the Juravinksi Hospital, Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Bali has around 100 publications in various peer reviewed journals.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Bali is actively involved in resident and fellow education; arthroplasty research with Hamilton Arthroplasty group; and contributes to several professional organizations. He currently leads the McMaster Orthopedic Resident Summer Anatomy Course and is the Juravinski Representative for MacOrtho Trainee Selection Sub-Committee. He also holds the position of Chief Analytics Officer for MacOrtho’s academic impact on social media and worldwide.
Dr Bali loves spending time with his three girls (two daughters and a physician wife!), who he believes bring out a perfect work-life balance in him.
Dr. Kamal Bali
Dr. Mitchell Winemaker graduated from the University of Toronto medical school program in 1991 and received his residency training in orthopedic surgery at the University of western Ontario this was followed by fellowship training and adult joint reconstructive surgery primary of the hip and knee at Harvard University he obtained his fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and surgeons in 1997 . New parents since April 1999 he has been practicing orthopedic surgeon at juravinski hospital in Hamilton where he holds admitting and surgical privileges and is currently the site chief of orthopedics surgery and the director of the regional joint assessment program for our local integrated Health Network. Doctor winemaker is also a part time clinical associate professor at McMaster University where he is involved in clinical research and the training of future orthopedic surgeons
Dr. Mitchell Winemaker
Dr. Wood is a fellowship trained arthroplasty surgeon. He completed his medical school and residency training at McMaster University. Following this, he underwent fellowship training at the University of Western, University Hospital, in lower extremity reconstruction. His current orthopaedic practice includes anterior and lateral total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, and revision hip and knee arthroplasty.
His research interests include periprosthetic joint infection and patient reported outcome measures following hip and knee arthroplasty. He is currently completing his MSc in health research methodology.
Dr. Thomas Wood
Dr. Zalzal has an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of Toronto. He completed his Medical Degree and Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery from McMaster University. He completed Fellowships in Adult Reconstruction at Mt. Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto.
He is an Associate Clinical Professor at McMaster University and his clinical practice is at OTMH in Oakville, Ontario. He specialises in Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS) including CAS TKR and CAS HTO and traditional THR.
He is Chair of the Research Ethics Committee OTMH.
Dr. Paul Zalzal
Dr. Zecchetto completed his fellowship in Orthopedic Oncology and Adult Reconstruction at the University of Ottawa.
He has devoted his clinical practice to treating patients with musculoskeletal tumors and complex limb trauma. He possesses expertise in the utilization of specialized endoprostheses for patients undergoing bone and joint resections, as well as those experiencing bone loss due to other factors such as revisions or complications stemming from trauma. Furthermore, he employs hybrid techniques that involve the integration of implants with autologous bone grafts and/or bone transplants.
He is focused on personalizing patient treatments through the utilization of innovative technologies, such as 3D navigation and customized implants.
Dr. Zecchetto is involved in training medical professionals and specialists in the field, as well as conducting research in the area.
Beyond his professional commitments, he champions the nurturing of relationships with family, friends, and the pursuit of sports, recognizing them as cornerstones for elevating the tapestry of life's quality.
Dr. Pierluca Zecchetto
Dr. Ekhtiari came to McMaster for medical school after completing a Bachelor of Kinesiology with High Honours at the University of Toronto. As a medical student at McMaster, he was exposed to MacOrtho and fell in love with the program and orthopaedic surgery as a specialty. He then completed his residency in the MacOrtho program, as well as a Master of Science in Health Research Methodology. Following residency, Dr. Ekhtiari completed The Hip Society European Travelling Fellowship at the ENDO Klinik in Hamburg, Germany, and at University of Cambridge in the UK. He has also completed a complex adult reconstruction fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital at the University of Toronto. Dr. Ekhtiari has a strong research interest, with over 90 publications and over 10 book chapters thus far, including being a principal investigator on an opioid reduction randomized controlled trial completed at McMaster. Outside the hospital, Dr. Ekhtiari enjoys running, cycling, reading, and travelling. He also has an active interest in palaeontology, having been a part of the team who identified a malignant cancer (osteosarcoma) in a dinosaur fossil for the first time.
Dr. Ekhtiari is excited to return to the MacOrtho team in order to be able to give back to the program that fostered his interest and skill in orthopaedics, contribute to the landscape of Evidence-Based Orthopaedics, and to help train the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr. Seper Ekhtiari
Dr. Aaron Gazendam, MD, MSc, FRCSC, is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in musculoskeletal oncology and sarcoma care. He received his medical doctorate at the University of Toronto and completed his orthopaedic surgical training at McMaster while concurrently completing a Master of Science in the Health Research Methodology program. He returned to Toronto to complete his fellowship at the Musculoskeletal Oncology Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital. He has published extensively in the field of musculoskeletal oncology and
has a clinical and academic interest in clinical trials for patients with sarcoma and metastatic bone disease.
